As a Psychoterapist and a CBT-I clinician, with a focus on sleep and anxiety, I provide support with a number of issues, which are often closely related. I provide specialized treatment for chronic insomnia, alongside addressing a variety of other sleep challenges such as nightmares, nocturnal panic episodes, and hypersomnia. Furthermore, due to the interconnected nature of sleep-related difficulties and their impact on overall well-being, I provide assistance with related issues such as low mood and depression, perfectionism, procrastination, and inner critic, offering comprehensive support to promote healing and improved quality of life. In addition to my expertise in sleep therapy, I offer support for individuals coping with a variety of anxiety disorders and symptoms, as well as stress management difficulties. These include symptoms or diagnoses of generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks and disorder, various phobias, and other anxiety-related concerns. What can I expect during therapy/counselling sessions?
During therapy/counselling sessions, you can expect a supportive and confidential environment where you can freely express your thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Initially, an assessment is conducted to gather information about your background, current concerns, and goals for therapy. Next, we will collaborate to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to address your specific challenges and goals. Therapy sessions will then focus on exploring and processing your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a safe and supportive environment. Depending on your needs and the challenges experienced and the therapeutic approach(s) used, sessions may involve structured activities, discussions, role-playing, or practicing new skills. What is Behavioural sleep therapy?
Behavioural sleep therapy, also referred to as behavioural sleep medicine, is a specialized therapeutic approach dedicated to improving sleep quality and addressing sleep disorders, such as insomnia. Unlike general therapy, behavioural sleep therapy focuses specifically on sleep-related issues and requires specialized expertise in sleep. A behavioural sleep therapist possesses in-depth knowledge of sleep physiology, sleep disorders, and evidence-based interventions tailored to promote healthy sleep patterns. They offer specialized assessment and treatment focused solely on sleep-related issues. Behavioural sleep therapists are skilled in identifying behavioural, cognitive, and environmental factors that contribute to sleep disturbances and develop personalized treatment plans to address these factors effectively.
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)?
CBT-I is a structured and evidence-based therapy specifically designed to treat insomnia. It focuses on identifying and modifying dysfunctional thoughts and behaviours that contribute to sleep disturbances. CBT-I aims to improve sleep by promoting relaxation, restructuring negative thought patterns, and establishing consistent sleep habits. During a CBT-I sessions, I will work with you to comoplete a comprehensive assessment of your sleep patterns, identify contributing factors to your insomnia, and develop personalized strategies to improve sleep quality. This may include sleep diaries, relaxation techniques, cognitive restructuring exercises, and sleep scheduling.
Do I need a physician's referral?
No, there is no need for referral from a physician. You can reach out directly to start the support process.
Is it possible to begin sleep therapy while taking sleeping medication?
Yes! Participating in sleep therapy, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), remains beneficial even if you're currently using sleeping medication. Integrating therapy with medication is a common approach in addressing insomnia, especially when medication alone may not offer sustainable solutions or when individuals aim to lessen their reliance on medication. Throughout our sessions, we'll construct a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs. This plan may involve gradually adjusting or optimizing your use of sleeping medication while incorporating behavioural and cognitive techniques to naturally enhance sleep quality. Additionally, we'll closely monitor your progress and can work with your perscriber to adapt the treatment plan as necessary to ensure you receive the most effective and personalized care.
Is virtual therapy/counselling effective in treating mental health and/or sleep challenges?
Absolutely! Research suggests that virtual therapy, including virtual CBT-I, can be as effective as in-person therapy for treating insomnia and other mental health concerns. Virtual therapy offers greater convenience and accessibility, making it an attractive option for many individuals. It eliminates barriers to access, allowing individuals to receive treatment regardless of their location or mobility limitations, as well as offering greater flexibility in scheduling appointments.
Are your services covered by extended health insurance plans?
Yes, services may be covered by private insurance and employee benefits. As a Master level Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW) practicing in Ontario and Nova Scotia, clients may be eligible for reimbursement through their extended health insurance plans. Many insurance providers offer coverage for services provided by Registered Social Workers. It is recommended that you check with your insurance provider to determine the specific coverage details and any requirements for reimbursement. Additionally, you are provided with a detailed receipt for submission to your insurance company for reimbursement purposes.
